His wife is from Thailand and had landed in Chicago Thursday, the groom explained. The rest of her luggage, including clothing she had brought with her, was also taken in the incident and was not in the car when it was recovered.
"The things that they left behind were some shoes and a dress," he said. "I was surprised they left the cheap wedding dresses."
The groom said the couple met online about two years ago and have been seeing each other ever since. They decided to pick Chicago to tie the knot.
"Being close to Christmas, we thought that Chicago would be a romantic area to get married," he said.
The couple will celebrate with a reception when they get back to Iowa, where he manages a lab at Iowa State University.
Andrews said the couple got their property back about 2:30 a.m. today.
"They were both so appreciative, not only that they got their car back but the wedding dress back," Andrews said."“The key thing was the wedding dresses." "They did an excellent job," said Andrews of Sandoval and McKenna. "They saved the wedding."
Hendricks, of the 1600 block of South Racine Avenue, was "not forthcoming" about how he'd gotten the car and authorities could not prove he had stolen it, so he was charged with misdemeanor trespass to a vehicle, Andrews said.
Hendricks has 30 prior arrests and nine convictions for a variety of felony and misdemeanor charges, police said.
